For years, businesses have heard the same three letters when talking about getting found online: SEO.

Now, there’s another acronym entering the conversation: GEO.

As artificial intelligence changes how people search for information, businesses are no longer thinking only about appearing on the first page of Google. They also have to consider whether their business can be discovered, understood and potentially referenced within AI-powered search experiences.

So, does GEO replace SEO? Not quite. In fact, the two work better together.

First Things First: What Is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving your website and online presence to help search engines understand your business and potentially show it to people searching for relevant products, services or information.

Think about the way you’ve traditionally used Google. You might search:

  • “Electrician near me”
  • “Best restaurants in Washington, PA”
  • “In-home senior care in Southwestern Pennsylvania”

SEO helps search engines connect those searches with relevant websites.

A strong SEO strategy can include using relevant keywords, creating helpful website content, improving website speed and mobile usability, maintaining accurate business information and ensuring your website has a structure search engines can easily understand.

And despite all the changes happening in search, SEO isn’t going away. Google says its existing SEO best practices remain relevant to its generative AI search experiences because those experiences build upon Google’s core ranking and quality systems.

So, What Is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) generally refers to optimizing your digital presence so content can be more easily discovered, understood and surfaced by generative AI-powered experiences.

Instead of searching for a few keywords, someone might ask an AI tool a complete question:

  • “What are some family-friendly things to do near Pittsburgh this weekend?”
  • “How do I know if my aging parent needs in-home care?”
  • “What should I look for when hiring a local contractor?”

The search experience is becoming more conversational. Rather than simply presenting a list of links, generative AI experiences may synthesize information to help answer the user’s question.

Google itself has acknowledged that people are increasingly turning to generative AI experiences to find information and has introduced guidance specifically addressing optimization for AI-powered Search features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Does GEO Require an Entirely New Strategy?

Here’s where things get interesting: good GEO starts with good SEO.

There are plenty of supposed tricks circulating about how businesses can “optimize for AI.” But Google’s current guidance cautions against chasing GEO or AEO hacks. Instead, it recommends continuing to follow foundational SEO practices and creating original, useful, trustworthy content designed for people.

That means businesses should focus on clearly explaining who they are, what they do, where they operate and what makes their expertise valuable. Your website should also answer the questions your customers actually ask.

For example, a pool company could publish information about how long it takes to install an inground pool. A real estate agent could explain the process of downsizing. A senior care organization could answer questions about the differences between various care options.

Content like this isn’t just packed with keywords. It’s useful — and that’s important for both traditional and AI-powered search.

Why Your Business Needs Both

SEO and GEO shouldn’t be viewed as competing strategies.

Think of SEO as building a strong digital foundation. GEO expands upon that foundation by considering how people increasingly search through conversational and AI-powered experiences.

The goal isn’t simply to rank for a keyword anymore. Your digital presence should clearly demonstrate what your business does, where you do it, who you serve and why someone should trust your expertise.

For local businesses, that makes accurate location information, helpful service pages, original content, strong online business profiles and a well-built website increasingly valuable.

And don’t forget the human on the other side of the screen. Google continues to emphasize content that provides genuine value rather than content created primarily to manipulate search visibility.
