If you’ve recently noticed an “AI info” label appearing on content across Facebook or Instagram, you’re not alone. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into the tools businesses use every day, Meta continues to change how it identifies and labels content that has been created or edited using AI.
For businesses and marketers, this raises an important question: What does an AI label actually mean, and should you be concerned if one appears on your content?
The short answer? Not necessarily — but it is something every business using social media should understand.
Why Is Meta Labeling AI Content?
Meta has been developing its AI-labeling system for several years in an effort to provide users with more transparency about the content they see.
Currently, Meta can apply an “AI info” label when it detects industry-standard signals indicating that an image, video, verbiage or other piece of content was generated using an AI tool. Content creators can also disclose the use of AI themselves.
Importantly, that does not always mean an entire piece of content was artificially generated.
Many of today’s most popular design, photography, video, and editing platforms incorporate some form of artificial intelligence. A marketer might use AI to remove an object from a photograph, extend a background, enhance an image, generate an element or make another seemingly minor adjustment.
Meta previously acknowledged that its labeling system could identify these types of modifications as AI use, even when AI played a relatively small role in the final creative. The company ultimately changed its original “Made with AI” terminology to “AI info” to provide more context. Meta also says content it detects as only modified or edited with AI can have that information placed within the post’s menu rather than receiving the same prominent treatment as content detected as AI-generated.
What About Your Facebook and Instagram Ads?
AI transparency is becoming increasingly relevant to paid advertising, too.
In June 2026, Meta announced an updated approach that expands its ad transparency efforts beyond content created with Meta’s own generative AI tools. Meta says it is beginning to detect ads created or edited using third-party AI tools through industry-standard signals as well.
When those signals are detected, AI information may be included within Meta’s new “About this ad” experience, located within the three-dot menu on an advertisement. Meta may display the disclosure more prominently in certain circumstances, including when its own generative AI advertising tools produce a photorealistic AI-generated person.
For businesses, this is another reminder that AI can become part of your creative workflow without always being obvious.
Does an AI Label Mean Your Content Is Bad?
No — an AI disclosure isn’t automatically a warning that content is false, misleading, low-quality or against Meta’s rules. In many situations, it is simply providing additional information about how the content was created or modified. Meta’s stated approach has increasingly emphasized providing context and transparency rather than automatically removing AI-generated content that otherwise complies with its policies. AI itself isn’t the problem. How you use it matters.
Businesses should think of AI as another tool within their marketing toolbox. It can help brainstorm ideas, improve efficiencies, enhance creative assets and support content production. But it shouldn’t replace your brand’s personality, real-world experiences, employees, customers or authentic connection with your audience.
In fact, originality continues to matter on Facebook. Meta announced in 2026 that it is placing greater emphasis on rewarding original content while deprioritizing duplicative or low-value content.
What Should Businesses Do Moving Forward?
Don’t panic if you see an AI disclosure on a post or advertisement. Instead, understand how your marketing materials are being created.
Talk with your marketing team or agency about the tools being used to design and edit your content. Prioritize original photography and video whenever possible, especially when showcasing your people, products, services, events and community involvement. And when AI does make sense, use it intentionally rather than simply because the technology is available.
Most importantly, don’t sacrifice authenticity for efficiency.
AI will continue to influence how businesses market themselves, and the rules surrounding AI-generated content will continue to evolve alongside the technology. Meta itself continues to develop AI-powered creation tools across Facebook while simultaneously expanding transparency measures around AI-generated media.
At Reimagine Main Street, we believe the strongest marketing strategies combine new technology with something AI can’t replicate: a genuine understanding of your business, as well as your customers and community.
